Supervisor James Lynn Cartlidge was elected to the Forrest County Board of Supervisors in 1976 and with input from many constituents started efforts for a multi purpose arena to accommodate the growing demand for equine and livestock functions.  Plans finally became reality in March 1999 when the doors of the Forrest County Multi Purpose Center opened for operation.  At the Southern Miss Coca-Cola Classic Rodeo, the facility was officially dedicated and named for the man who (along with dozens of others) worked hard for more than two decades to make the vision a reality.  The James Lynn Cartlidge Forrest County Multi Purpose Center hosted the dedication ceremony and rodeo on March 13, 1999.  Since then, more than a million people have attended the hundreds of events that have taken place on the complex grounds.
